It was a moment of great joy, jubilation and emotions as Miss Uduak Okon Etim returned home to reunite with her family after over twenty years of abduction.

Miss Uduak Okon Etim was abducted about twenty years ago while in class at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Primary School, Idu, Uruan Local Government Area and was trafficked to Benin City in Edo State.

According to her testimony, during her years in captivity, she was subjected to modern day slavery, characterized by child labour, child abuse, physical torture and starvation.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Ijeoma Uduak, Zonal Commander for Prohibition Of Traffic in Persons, Benin Zonal Command expressed gratitude to God, and said that it was a long journey to Victory as several arrests were made after serious investigation that took them some months. She also thanked Rev (Engr) J.B. Effiong, the Zonal leader of Central Uruan who assisted the agency to identify the village and family of Miss Uduak Okon Etim.

Mrs Ijeoma explained that the agency had helped her to acquire a profitable skill for past years after she had been freed.

“After discovering that her abductors did not give her any formal education, or help her to acquire any skill, the agency decided to train her before she could be released to her family”.

“The NAPTIP organised a career counseling for her and later discovered the hidden talent of hair dressing. And the agency through one of their supporting NGO’s funded Miss Uduak Okon to acquire skill in Hair Dressing”.

“After her training, the NGO purchased all Hair Dressing equipment and foodstuffs for her and supported her with the sum of three hundred thousand Naira to rent a shop”.

The Zonal Commander further pleaded with the Government of Akwa Ibom State and the wife of the Governor, Her Excellency (Dr) Martha Emmanuel, in particular, to also support Miss Uduak Okon Etim with family to have a good accommodation.

In her words: “I am aware of the good works of the wife of your governor in giving shelter to Widows and I learnt Uduak’s mother here does not have a good home. So I plead with our beautiful first lady to extend her shelter of hope to this poor family”, the commander solicited.
